music magazine case study

Music Magazine case study:

Kerrang

Magazine History

Kerrang was first launched on June 6th 1981 as a monthly music magazine. But due to Kerrang’s popularity it started to appear on a fortnightly basis. However in 1987 Kerrang went weekly because it was in high demand this gave a strong indication that Kerrang was going to be around to stay. When kerrang started, during in the 1980s, it focused on the music that wasn’t main stream but was still popular of that era and during in the 1980s and early 90s this was British Heavy Metal, hard rock and glam metal music. However in the mid-90s and 2000s Kerrang discarded these genres in order to stay with the times they favoured more popular genres like grunge and nu metal this produced bands such as Nirvana and sum 41. Kerrang changed its favoured genres again in the late 2000s/00s to emo and metal core they did this in order to keep with the times and not be or become “out of date”. Kerrang continues to focus on popular but not quite main stream music, but obviously features the music of this era. Over the years Kerrang has often been criticised for discarding one musical genre in favour of a new musical genre that has become more popular.

The Magazine Content

Kerrang may have just started as a magazine but has spread out in to other forms of media. This can be seen by the fact that kerrang has its own TV and radio stations. Kerrang also has a website this means that they are always able to reach their demographic wherever the target audience. Kerrang both have a hard copy (an actual magazine that you would buy in a shop) and a digital copy so that people can access the magazine wherever and whenever they like. Kerrang’s radio station is not only the biggest outside London but has managed to captivate 1.3 million listeners and their television channel gets an average of 7.1 million viewers.

The Publisher Of The Magazine

The name kerrang is an onomatopoeic word that comes from the sound that is made when you play a power chord on an electric guitar. This suggest that even when kerrang first started it was interested in how to make thins digital this means that it only seems natural for them to have moved in to television, radio and online.

·         Kerrang website

The kerrang website is dedicated to finding the latest information about the current and upcoming bands and events the website contains an online shop, podcasts, TV and radio segments and a message board. This ensures more opportunities for them to sell merchandise and other related products.

·

Kerrang radio

The kerrang radio station plays a sequence of rock and alternative music. The radio has specialists programs dedicated to subgenres of rock music. The radio station also broadcasts interviews with people who firstly affect popular culture secondly affect society and thirdly that are involved in music.

·         Kerrang TV

Kerrang television channel is a music channel that will still cover rock music but the more mainstream rock music it also show the music videos of some classic rock bands and classic heavy metal bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Scorpions.

The Typical Reader Profile

Kerrang has a target audience with a median age of 22 years old furthermore 52% of kerrang readers are classed as having an ABC1 profile this means that 52% of the readers are likely to be students that either house or flat share but some of them may rent a small flat of their own. They are said to be cosmopolitan sharers that live in multi ethnic areas that are on low income. 70% of kerrang readers love rock music and because of this are 5.5 times more likely to attend rock concerts. Kerrang’s audience is mainly male as only 40% of their total readers are female.

Layout  And Trademarks Of The Magazine

Kerrang gets a lot of people advertise in their magazine they say that their advising space is perfect for government messages, games, mobile technology and films their name is in a white text with a smashed glass effect to emphasize the fact that this magazine is going to be about rock because it suggests the music’s that rocky and that loud that it breaks the sound barrier. Furthermore the main colours kerrang use are white red and yellow this is because all of these colours contrast and stand out against their main back ground colour which is black because black in music magazines connotes rock music. Kerrang are also famous for using lots of images in there magazine this is because their target audience is young and would not be interested in reading lots of text.

How Does The Magazine Reflect The Values Of  Its Audience

Kerrang’s brand value is Live Life Loud this is reflected in Kerrang’s audience by the fact that Kerrang’s audience is young this means that they tend to be in to themselves as they are most likely to be into music clothes technology and music so they haven’t really got any core values.

mood board analysis 4

Target audience

My first photo is of three young adolescents in rock poses with their guitars and rock make-up on these boys look about thirteen years of age this mean that my magazine is going to aim it’s self at a teenage audience going from 13 up to about 19/20 this is shown in my third picture. This connotes that there will be more pictures then text however to keep the older part of the audience interested the main article would have to include a fair bit of information.

My second picture is of two friend’s enjoying themselves at a festival this shows that my target audience are interested in going to festivals and seeing their favourite bands /artists. This could mean that the audience would be interested in up and coming festivals therefore a festival calendar would benefit them telling them what festivals are on when there on and where they are.

My fourth picture shows that my target audience are not main stream as this girl looks like she has her individual and unique style. This connotes that she likes to stand out from the crowd this connotes that although my magazine may have some mainstream rock bands in mainly it would have up and coming rock bands in it.

My fifth picture shows that although the target audience are young and into rock music this does not mean that they only wear black as can be seen  these boys are not wearing main stream fashion but are not dressed all in black they have their own individual style.

In conclusion this magazine is going to have more of a male audience but still has to cater for the females that will read the magazine.

Fonts

My first font is Rockwell this font would be good to use in my magazine as it stands out and is clear to read however it’s not that fun so this text might be used on main feature article but that’s about it.

My second font is scary this would be most suitably used as something like the tile of the magazine this is because it looks fun but at the same time is readable it would attract a younger audience this is because it looks a bit jagged .

My third font is called Hollywierd this would be good to use on the other articles as it would fit in with the rest of the magazine or this font could be used to point out important information for example free posters or something like that.

My fourth font is called comic sketch this font would be ideal to use on my contents page as it stands out so the reader will read the contents page furthermore this font is soft so would blend in as  well.

My fifth font is called cherry coke this font would work anywhere throughout my magazine as it looks young and would look good in an article or even on the contents page.

Advertising

My first image is of a pair of skull candy head phone these headphones would be good to have advertisements placed in my magazine as they relate to my magazine as my magazine is about music further more they are colourful and at the same time would appeal to my target audience because these head phone have things like tow skull heads with their faces touching this is quick and most of the time skull heads tend to suggest rock or at least rock styled music.

My second picture would appeal to my target audience because the type of clothes that this shop sells are aimed at teenagers for example they could buy a t-shirt that relates to their favourite band or artist. They also sell clothes that relate to the TV programs that my target audience watch. This shop is one example, shops that are like this shop or similar to it could advertise in my magazine whether they are on line or on the high street.

My third picture is aimed at the girls that would read my magazine as there are a smaller amount of female readers the advertise has to be aimed either at both sexes, like the two that I have already talked about in the above paragraphs, or aimed at males. This means that every issue should only aim one or two adverts just at the female audience as the majority of the target audience would not buy this product. However frequencies that are aimed at young people, ideally those that seem a bit dark and moody, would be perfect to aim at my target audience.

Picture four is sole aimed at my male audience this is because the majority of male s that would be reading my magazine would be interested in playing PSP and XBOX games this means that I would need to advertise these types of games in my magazine. I could also include adverts for new consoles and other game releases. The majority of my target audience would probably buy this product.

My last picture is of another game but this one is aimed at both sexes therefore although it’s a game and is still aimed at the males that will be reading my magazine the females have a game that is also aimed at them. This would make the magazine more balanced in the adverts aimed at the people in my target audience.

Colours

My first colour is called dark angel red this colour would suit my magazine as the colour is a good contrast when seen next to a colour like black  this means if I had a black back ground and a this dark angel red font the text in the article would stand out to the reader. The uses of the colour red in this rock magazine would be a good idea as it connotes passion this would mean that my audience would be seen to be passionate about rock music.

My second colour is called gothic purple this would also stand out against a black back ground or a white background but it should not be used on a red or gold back ground as it would make the article hard to read.

My third colour is called drama queen black this would be good to use as a back ground colour as not only would it symbolise a rock magazine it would contrast all of the other colours.

My fourth colour is gold this connotes wealth this mean that the article featured in my magazine would aim to give my audience a rich understanding into their favourite bands or artist.it would also contrast well against a black back ground.

My fifth colour is white this colour connotes purity this would connote to my readers that the bands and artist featured in my magazine live a full on rock life style.
